The Incubators - Must Hatch

The Incubators - Must Hatch - 2012

from amazon
Fronted by singer-songwriters Katie Freeman (vocals) & Chris Chappell (vocals, guitar), and supported by bassist Max Ramey (Davis Ramey), The Incubators debut release Must Hatch is an eclectic mix of groove-based roots rock. Based out of Petaluma, CA, home of the Must Hatch Incubator Company, The Incubators are a nest collective of talented players and writers. Drawing upon the abundance of top-notch musicians in the San Francisco Bay Area, Must Hatch is packed throughout with performances by established Bay Area talents such as organists Melvin Seals (Jerry Garcia Band), and Mike Emerson (Carlene Carter, Blues Broads), guitarists Scott Law (Darol Anger, Brokedown In Bakersfield), Chris Haugen (Poor Man's Whiskey), Chris Rossbach (Zigaboo Modeliste, Bobby Vega), Matt Silva (John Cippolina), Ian Lamson (Elvin Bishop), drummers T Moran (Starship, Coldblood) and Dale Fanning (Materialized), and vocalist April Grisman. The music is song based, in the Rondo form, and relies on the vocal blend of Freeman and Chappell, yet shows off the musicianship of the talented players. Mixed by Oz Fritz (Tom Waits, Bill Laswell) the album was recorded first onto analog tape and employs vintage instrumentation true to its rootsy yet eclectic orientation.

William Souffreau & The Moonlovers - William Souffreau & The Moonlovers

William Souffreau & The Moonlovers  - William Souffreau & The Moonlovers  - 2008

William Souffreau is one of Belgium's great rock pioneers. He has been playing music for more than five decades now.

William was born on the 14th of April 1946, in Erembodegem, under a Belgian moon. He jumped into the music scene in the early sixties with the rock 'n' roll band The Blue Jets. At that time William wrote his first song, 'Feel so Lonely', which was later recorded on the album ‘Shake It’ (2002) by Blink It. Around 1963 William played with The Mings. His first recordings date from 1966, with The Four Rockets. Near the end of the 60s The Four Rockets became the more psychedelic rockband Dementia Praecox.

In 1970 William was elected number one rock singer of Belgium. Earlier that year he had founded the band The Voodoo, which soon became Irish Coffee. This rock band was a large success in many countries. Irish Coffee recorded one album and four singles (including the hit single 'Masterpiece'), all collector's items now. The band played many concerts and did numerous TV and radio shows. Irish Coffee was a support act for Uriah Heep, Chicken Shack and Golden Earring, among others. In 1974 the Irish Coffee story came to an end.

Two years later William established Joystick, with a funky horn section and great musicians such as Tony Boast. They were support act for Motörhead among others. They never made an album, but a few of the Joystick songs were recorded on the Irish Coffee reunion album (2004).

Shawn Phillips - Infinity

Shawn Phillips - Infinity - 2014

Shawn Phillips is one of most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early '70s singer-songwriter boom. In addition to recording more than 20 solo albums, he has worked with Donovan, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Bernie Taupin, The Beatles and many others. Shawn has been described as "The best kept secret in the music business,” by the late rock impresario Bill Graham.

Infinity was recorded in 1989 using the “Infinity Device”. It was an innovative experiment, but remained unreleased until now. The “Infinity Device,” was a collection of pre MIDI Analog Synthesizers and drum modules modified to allow Shawn to perform alone yet sound like an entire band. Tracks 1-4 and 8 were done live by Shawn with no overdubbing. Tracks 2-3-5 and 7 were performed live by Shawn with additional parts played simultaneously by Elmo Peeler. Each track was recorded in one take. The Entire Album was recorded and mixed in two days at Cherokee Studios. This is the only studio recording of Shawn performing with the Infinity Device.

The Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder - Makes Your Ears Smile

The Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder - Makes Your Ears Smile - 2009

from ONECHORD.NET
Besides being a major contributor to a) the greatest music magazine Shindig! b) the greatest reissue label Rev-Ola, Andy Morten is also making pop music under the name The Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder. Unlike Shindig! and Rev-Ola, The Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder might not be one of the greatest things in the world, but it’s truly enjoyable pop music nevertheless. Andy Morten used to be in a great british psychedelic power pop group Bronco Bullfrog that released some fine albums before breaking up some years ago. He wrote a major share of their great songs so he has proved himself as a great pop tunesmith even before The Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder.

Makes Your Ears Smile does what the title promises. It’s a really good uplifting pop record that contains melodic pop treats that somehow keep the sun up even though your calendar states that sunset should have happened an hour ago. Only minor flaw for me is that there a couple of lyrics that I don’t like at all. Especially the opening track entitled Track One tries to be a bit too witty and it manages to spoil that otherwise good song for me. But mostly Makes Your Ears Smile contains really good pop music with traces of psychedelia here and there.  Songs like Olivia’s Plaything and She Looks Good In The Sun are marvellous, but I must say that my favourite The Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder so far is that psychedelic pop jewel Elliot Sunshine from the Shindig! compilation. If that song is from the upcoming up second album, the sun is indeed shining for Andy Morten and things look really promising.

21ST Century Schizoid Band - Live in West Hollywood

21ST Century Schizoid Band - Live in West Hollywood - 2004

21st Century Schizoid Band were a King Crimson alumnus group formed in 2002. The name derives from the famous song "21st Century Schizoid Man" from the first King Crimson album, In the Court of the Crimson King. The initial band featured Mel Collins on saxophones, flute and keyboards, Michael Giles on drums, Peter Giles on bass, Ian McDonald on alto saxophone, flute and keyboards, and Jakko Jakszyk on guitar and vocals. All but Jakszyk had previously been members of King Crimson in its early years. Ian Wallace, another former Crimson member from that same period, replaced Mike Giles in early 2003 after the band's Japanese tour. Further international touring followed in 2003/04.

The band played live with sets concentrating on compositions from King Crimson's first four albums and other works from the band members' back catalogues, including McDonald and Giles. They have released four albums, mostly of live work but including newer and/or recent compositions, such as Ian McDonald's "Let There Be Light" (from his solo album Driver's Eyes) and "Catley's Ashes," a Jakszyk instrumental which later appeared on his solo album The Bruised Romantic Glee Club (2006).

The band has been inactive since 2004; with members based in different countries, touring proved to be logistically and financially difficult. The possibility of performing again in 2005 was considered following offers from festivals, possibly with Guy Evans (of Van der Graaf Generator) on drums to replace Wallace who had other commitments, but the idea was abandoned. Wallace's death in February 2007 would seem to have closed the lid on the band for good.

Jakszyk and Collins went on to record as a trio with founding Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp (and with rhythmic support from fellow members Tony Levin and Gavin Harrison) on the Scarcity of Miracles album in 2011. This was followed in 2013 by the announcement of a new King Crimson formation including all five, plus two additional members.
