Ronnie Lane - Live At Rockpalast

Ronnie Lane - Live At Rockpalast 1980 - 2012

Chicago - The Nashville Sessions

Chicago - The Nashville Sessions - 2013

from VVN Music
As is becoming more-and-more commonplace, artists are re-recording their old material, not for small "oldies" labels as happened in the past, but to retain or reacquire rights to their own music.

That's how Chicago came to record The Nashville Sessions, a re-recording of fifteen of their biggest tracks.

It all started in 2008 when the group signed with international music publisher Primary Wave Music. According to the band "The entire landscape had changed from what was normal when the band's debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, was released in 1969. ... There was a 'disconnect' in terms of new recordings, new music and having a presence in other media and 'new media.'

"The old model had us waiting for the record companies, or the publishing companies, which represented our body of work, to create that presence. It was no longer efficient."

Luckily, the band had retained their rights to rerecord their music, so they went into a Nasville studio between projects and began the work of painstakingly recreating their original tracks.  They first recreated the rhythm parts, even trying to duplicate every glitch and mistake. Then, Robert Lamm added the keyboard followed by the brass parts and the lead and backup vocals.

"Listening to the mixes we are amazed at how close we came to sounding like the original recordings."

Glenn Hughes And Joe Lynn Turner - EP

Glenn Hughes And Joe Lynn Turner - EP - 2012

Tim Bogert And Carmine Appice - Friends

Tim Bogert And Carmine Appice - Friends - 2013- EP

The Dreadful Yawns - Dreadful Yawns

The Dreadful Yawns  - Dreadful Yawns - 2005

By James Christopher Monger, AMG

Formed in 1998 by singer/guitarist/songwriter Ben Gmetro, guitarist/singer Dave Molnar, and drummer Charlie Druesedow, the Dreadful Yawns' subtle blend of acoustic-based indie pop, space rock, and neo-psychedelic folk went against the grain of the late-'90s post-hardcore Cleveland scene. In 2002, through perseverance and musical integrity, the band began to gain support from the often unforgiving Midwest, and after numerous lineup changes that saw brief stints by various area bass players (they eventually settled on Mike Allan), percussionists, and piano players, the multi-instrumentalists managed to complete Early, their full-length debut for Undertow Music, released in 2003.

The Pretend EP came out the following year, and the band moved to Bomp Records soon after it was released. Their self-titled sophomore release hit stores in 2005, and it proved to be their one and only release on Bomp. The Dreadful Yawns moved to Exit Stencil and underwent a near complete changing of the guard before their third album, Rest, came out in 2007. Gmetro's supporting cast of characters at that point in time consisted of Elizabeth Kelly, Chris Russo, Clayton Heuer, and Eric Schulte.

Terry & The Pirates - Rockpalast West Coast Legends (re-re-post)

Terry & The Pirates - Rockpalast West Coast Legends Vol. 5 - 2009 (DVDA)

It's going on twenty eight years since Terry & The Pirates went on their whirlwind seventy two hour tour of Europe to play three gigs. Since that time both John Cipollina and Nicky Hopkins have passed away, and over the ensuing years with all of the hard rocking and partying that has  transpired and considering just the passage of time alone, it may have left some the band's memories a little hazy. I know if John was still around he'd probably be able to write a book about it, but since he's not we'll try to tell you the story as best we can.

The cold weather conditions of going to Germany in the dead of winter is not the most perfect setting for a bunch of musicians who were accustomed to the bright sunshine and idyllic hills of picturesque Marin County in Northern California; but when you live to play the music that you love, you really don't have any choice, but to go and follow your muse.

Bill Belmont from Rag Baby Records helped set things up for Terry. It was December of 1982 when Terry & The Pirates embarked on what is now jokingly referred to by the band as the "Torture Tour" and for good reason - it was grueling.

This tour was going to be a little strange because their guitarist Greg Douglass had prior tour commitments with the Greg Kihn Band and would be unable to be a part of it, so Terry Dolan, John Cipollina, David Hayes, Greg Elmore and Nicky Hopkins would have to go on without him.

The night before they were to leave for Germany their wives and girlfriends made sure to "keep the boys busy" until the wee wee hours to help ensure that they would behave themselves while on tour. No one is talking as to whether this tactic worked or not and maybe that's a good thing, but the general consensus was if they weren't traveling, getting a quick bite to eat, doing a sound check or playing a gig, they were trying to get a little shut eye in between.

Pete Haycock's Climax - Total Climax

Pete Haycock's Climax - Total Climax - 1985

Pete Haycock ((4 March 1951 – 30 October 2013) formed what was then known as the Climax Blues Band in 1967 with singer Colin Cooper, right at the height of the British blues boom. The band released its self-titled debut album in 1969 - reportedly recorded in two days, it featured a mix of original and traditional (Big Bill Broonzy, Sonny Boy Williamson) blues songs. In 1970, the band dropped the "Chicago" from its name so as not to be confused with the American band, and recorded a number of well-received albums as the Climax Blues Band during the early 1970s.

In 1976, with an amazing nine albums under their belt (in a mere seven years), the band released Gold Plated, which would become their breakthrough album, scoring Top 30 status on the strength of "Couldn't Get It Right," the song hitting #3 in the U.S. and #10 in the U.K. By this time, the band's sound was more rock than blues, with a few jazzy flourishes thrown in for good measure, but it was Haycock's lead guitar skills that drove the band's fortunes. They continued to release albums at a prolific pace, but Haycock left the band in 1985 to pursue his own musical vision, and Climax Blues Band broke up a couple years later.

Haycock soon formed Pete Haycock's Climax, the band touring extensively throughout Europe, the guitarist later recording a pair of instrumental solo albums for I.R.S. Records. Moving to Germany, Haycock launched a new career writing movie scores, collaborating with composer Hans Zimmer on films like Thelma & Louise before striking out on his own. A benefit project for children with cancer led to Haycock's association with fellow guitarist Robin George, the two recording a charity single together as the LovePower Band. After a lengthy hiatus from the stage, Haycock returned back to his roots, forming Pete Haycock's True Blues in 2008, touring and recording a single album.
