Eddie Hinton - Letters From Mississippi

Eddie Hinton - Letters From Mississippi - 1987

Guitarist, songwriter, and singer Eddie Hinton may be one of the great, unheralded white blues musicians of all time. Fortunately, fans can latch onto a few recordings on compact disc. Hinton died far too young at the age of 51 on July 28, 1995, yet his guitar playing can be heard all over famous recordings by famous people -- hit records by Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Joe Tex, Solomon Burke, Percy Sledge, the Staple Singers, the Dells, Johnny Taylor, Elvis Presley, Boz Scaggs, Hour Glass, Otis Redding, and even reggae star Toots Hibbert of Toots & the Maytals.

Hinton was a session guitarist non-pareil. After working with Southern bands like the Spooks and the Five Minutes, he played lead guitar for Muscle Shoals Sound rhythm section from 1967 to 1971. What most people didn't know at the time was that Hinton was also a talented singer, songwriter, arranger and producer in his own right. In the late '60s, Muscle Shoals was something of a hit factory for Atlantic Records recording artists, under the careful, patient tutelage of legendary producer Jerry Wexler. Hinton was just 22 when he was invited to the Shoals area by fellow songwriter and producer Martin Greene. The Hinton/Greene songwriting and producing team produced several country/soul hits, including "Cover Me," and "It's All Wrong But It's Alright" for Percy Sledge.

The Who: Tommy - Live at the Royal Albert Hall

The Who: Tommy - Live at the Royal Albert Hall - 2017

In April 2017 The Who took to the stage at London’s Royal Albert Hall to perform their rock opera TOMMY live in its entirety for the first time in their long and illustrious career. Previous Who live shows had always dropped two, three or four songs from the album but for this show in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust the band would perform every song. With specially created animations on a huge screen above the stage and creative use of lighting the concert told the story of the “deaf, dumb and blind kid who sure played a mean pinball.” In addition, at the end of TOMMY, the sell-out crowd were treated to a short set of Who classics. Always a great live band, this performance was a thrilling ride from start to finish.

As well as the incredible full show, we also include some great bonus features. There is a behind the scenes featurette, plus also full screen animations of both The Acid Queen and Pinball Wizard with the live performance audio.

Joe Yamanaka With Flower Travellin' Band - The Times

Joe Yamanaka With Flower Travellin' Band - The Times - 1975

Originally released in 1975, The Times was a best-of collection repackaging some of the most accessible moments from Japanese psychedelic rock pilgrims the Flower Travellin' Band.

The album pulls tracks from their hard-edged 1971 masterpiece Satori, 1972's follow-up Made in Japan, and their half-live/half-studio 1973 double album Make Up. Joe Yamanaka's howling vocals and percussion augmentations lead the band on trips both heavy and reflective over the course of the album's eight extensive tracks.

The lead guitar work throughout is a highlight, and the refined sense of controlled mayhem in both playing and adventurous guitar tones becomes a major trademark of the band. The ominous doomsday sludge of "Hiroshima" ranks with some of Black Sabbath's most demonic early riff-fests, but made more uneasy with traditional Japanese scales being mutated into droning tradeoffs between vocals and guitar. The two-part "Satori" is a perfect highlight of the band's dual guitar work, while the epic soft psych journey of "Look at My Window" borrows from the mid-'60s San Francisco acid rock scene. There's a heavy Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead influence, but over its 11-plus minutes, the song melds summery harmonies with acoustic explorations akin to Popol Vuh's mellower soundtrack work.

The Times is definitely an overview, and the band's official first album Satori is a more fully realized and cohesive statement, but The Times offers a fantastic (if truncated) look at one of the better obscure groups from the heyday of experimental psychedelia.

Orange Bicycle - Orange Bicylcle

Orange Bicycle - Orange Bicylcle - 1970

Orange Bicycle were formed in early 1967, an English Pop/Psych band who were mainly studio based throughout their short existence. The band were made up of various musicians throughout the years, namely lead singer Robert J Scales (under his stage name Rob Storm), John Bachini (Bass), Kevin Curry (Drums), Bernie Lee (Guitar) and Wilson Malone (Vocals, Keyboards and Drums). Wil Malone would later go on to play in various bands such as ‘Fickle Pickle’, ‘Bobak, Jons, Malone’ and the second incarnation of ‘The Smoke’, as well as release a solo LP of notable worth.

The band played a style of music influenced by The Beach Boys, The Beatles and the hippy culture of the time, as well as by other groups like The Rolling Stones. They also regularly had a gig as backing band for the British duo Paul and Barry Ryan.

Many of the band members had been playing and making music through most of the 1960's in 'Rob Storm and the Whispers' when they toured as England's answer to the Beach Boys, and later, as fashions changed, they morphed into 'The Rob Storm Group'. Finally when the psychedelic revolution arrived they re-named themselves ‘Orange Bicycle’.

Their first single as Orange Bicycle, "Hyacinth Threads", was a number 1 hit in France and successful in other European countries.

In 1968, the band started to cover various songs from the time such as The Rolling Stones’ "Sing This All Together", The Beatles’ "Carry That Weight", Bob Dylan’s "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" and Elton John’s "Take Me To The Pilot" in an attempt to hit the big time. These tracks are featured here on this CD release of their classic LP which came out via Parlophone Records under the name Orange Bicycle.

Much of the later material was produced by the one and only Jonathan Peel with cover artwork and photos by the legendary HIPGNOSIS design.

Black Merda - Forward from the Past

Black Merda - Forward from the Past - 2017

The titans of American rock known as Black Merda have released a new offering for fans new and old, “Forward from the Past.” The milestone LP includes 12 original Black Merda tracks for a listening time approaching a full hour. It has been proudly published on the Third Child Productions Inc. independent record label. It is the eighth offering from the group since their self-titled debut on Chess Records in 1970. Featuring razor-sharp instrumentation, socially conscientious songwriting, and that classic Detroit funk-rock sound the band helped innovate nearly fifty years ago, “Forward from the Past” stands as proof that Black Merda can slay with the best of them in the 21st century.

Black Merda cite as artistic influences Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Sly Stone, James Brown, and Freddie King. They also cite as a major influence simply, “being from Detroit, Motown.”

The Motor City funk-rock crew have influenced far more musicians than can feasibly have influenced Black Merda, themselves, however, and this influence may seem stronger today than ever before.

“There’s many young people who’s starting to really appreciate the heartfelt music of the past,” write Black Merda. “We want to lead the way in keeping it alive.”

Fans of the group will note that “Forward from the Past” maintains a steady course from 2009’s “Force of Nature” while incorporating more contemporary digital music methods at the same time. The result is a rock record with soul, groove, rhythm, and plenty to say to audiophiles of every age and creed.

“The title of the album is ‘Forward from the Past,’” note Black Merda. “We want to keep elements of the past in the now and future.” They describe the record’s aim as “trying not to lose the realness of live music while mixing in some of the sequenced sounds of today.”

Black Merda began in the mid-1960s and reunited in 2005. Today they are original members Charles Hawkins, Anthony Hawkins, and VC L. Veasey. They survive drummer Tyrone Hite who passed away in 2004. They have shared the stage with the likes of Edwin Starr (“War”), Gene Chandler (the Duke of Earl), Wilson Pickett, the Spinners, the Artistics, Billy Butler, the Chi-Lites, Joe Tex, Jackie Wilson, the Temptations, Eric Burdon (the Animals) and War. Their story is a legitimate part of music history.

More recently, Black Merda were sampled by Ja Rule in 2005 and by Kanye West in 2009. The Detroit Metro Times named the Merda’s 1970 track, “Cynthy-Ruth” as one of the 100 Greatest Detroit Songs Ever. The track was also featured in the HBO documentary, “The Nine Lives Of Marion Barry” (2009). Spinner.com featured Black Merda in their 2010 article, “In Living Color: 20 Important Black Rockers Past and Present.” Their 2009 reunion LP’s chief single, “Take A Little Time,” was re-released on Mojo Magazine’s 2010 compilation, “Heavy Soul.” The Detroit Metro Times also revisited Black Merda in 2010 by choosing their self-titled 1970 debut album as one of “Detroit’s Greatest Hits that Should Have Been”

Flied Egg - Dr. Siegel's Fried Egg Shooting Machine - 1972

Flied Egg - Dr. Siegel's Fried Egg Shooting Machine - 1972

Japan's proggers Flied Egg, consisting of former Strawberry Path alumni Shigeru Narumo and Hiro Tsunoda, supported by former Brush leader, Masayoshi Takanaka, released two albums in the early '70s, Dr. Siegel's Fried Egg Machine being the first and undoubtedly the better of the two. Dr. Siegel's..., originally released in 1972, is a much more keyboard-oriented affair, with Narumo adding a Moog, celeste and harpsichord to his usual Hammond and piano line-up. On this album, the musical influences are more Uriah Heep than the previous Hendrix-inspired leanings, although touches of Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Deep Purple, Birth Control and even Black Sabbath find their way into the musical mèlange. Dr. Siegel's... presents a rich selection of musical styles, culminating with "Guide Me To The Quietness," a glorious prog epic that brings an inventive and enjoyable album to a climactic finale.
