Peter Green - Man of the World The Anthology (1968-1988)

Peter Green - Man of the World The Anthology (1968-1988) - 2004

It’s difficult to write about Peter Green without accidentally lapsing into past tense, as though the founder of the original Fleetwood Mac were no longer here. He is, of course, very much in the present tense, touring and recording with Peter Green’s Splinter Group after long periods of inactivity in the grips of mental illness. On good nights, he can step up to the plate and show glimpses of the Greenie of old; other nights, bandmate Nigel Watson shoulders the lion’s share of the guitar duties.

This two-CD, 36-track package compiles the best of Green’s tentative steps back into action, with 24 tracks from five solo albums recorded between 1979 and 1982 – In The Skies, Little Dreamer, Blue Guitar, Whatcha Gonna Do , and White Sky – along with 10 live tracks and studio outtakes from Fleetwood Mac’s peak.

When the solo albums were originally released, it was apparent that one of the great voices in blues and rock guitar had lost much of his fire. But, in retrospect, hearing selected tracks from that period, Green holds his own – on cuts like the minor blues “Fool No More,” the funky “Loser Two Times,” and the jungly instrumental “Tribal Dance.” There are rough spots, like “Touch My Spirit” and “Trying To Hit My Head Against The Wall,” where his singing wanders off-key and his once-dynamic solos stumble and ramble. But the Mac tracks (including four from the group’s legendary Boston Tea Party stint of 1970) show the expressiveness Green was capable of at his best – as both guitarist and singer. What set Green apart was his unhurried economy and taste, but he could also turn up the heat. As B.B. King once said of his English disciple, “He makes me sweat.”

Glenn Hughes - The Official Bootleg Series - Volume I

Glenn Hughes - The Official Bootleg Series - Volume I - 2018

He’s been hailed “The Voice Of Rock”, and for good reason, as this 7 CD live box set ably testifies. With vocals soaked in blues and soul, Glenn Hughes has played with and fronted many legends of rock, including Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Hughes-Thrall, Trapeze and Black Country Communion.

When Glenn’s 1994 tour hit Japan, always a stronghold of Glenn fans, he was promoting the “From Now On…” album. Originally released as “Burning Japan Live”, the show features ‘The Liar’, ‘Lay My Body Down’ and the title track from the new “From Now On…” album, among an incendiary set that touches on some of the cream of Glenn’s back catalogue, including the Hughes-Thrall classics ‘Muscle And Blood’ and ‘I Got Your Number’, Trapeze’s ‘Coast To Coast’, plus a host of Purple classics, including ‘Lady Double Dealer’, ‘This Time Around’ and ‘Owed To ‘G’’.

The same tour took Glenn to the Alexandra Rock Teater venue in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 25, 1994. In a similar collection to the Japanese show on CD1, the appreciative Danish crowd on CD2 are treated to Deep Purple’s ‘Burn’, ‘Gettin’ Tighter’ and ‘You Keep On Moving’, as well as ‘Into The Void’ from the then current “From Now On…” album, co-written with guitarist Eric Anders Bojstedt and keyboard player Mic Michaeli, in a band that also featured Thomas Larsson on guitar, Ian Haugland on drums and John Levénon bass.

Disc 3 kicks off with four lively Deep Purple classics captured at the Gran Rex Theatre in Buenos Aires, Argentina in December 2003. The acoustic set from Sydney, Australia in June 2006 that completes Disc 3 sees Glenn delve back to his debut solo platter, “Play Me Out”, with the single ‘I Found A Woman’, followed by a unique cover of ‘Nights In White Satin’ from the 2006 CD “Music For The Divine”, plus a take of Procol Harum’s ‘A Whiter Shade Of Pale’, an impassioned version of “Burn” album classic ‘Mistreated’, plus the title track to the album he was then promoting, “Soul Mover”.

Discs 4 and 5 kick off with Purple barnstormer ‘Stormbringer’ from a show at Circo Voador, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on October 28, 2007. As well as Purple cuts ‘Might Just Take Your Life’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ that finales with ‘Burn’, the set includes ‘Steppin’ On’ and ‘You Got Soul’ from “Music For The Divine”, ‘Don’t Let Me Bleed’, ‘Land Of The Livin’ (Wonderland)’ and the driving title track from “Soul Mover”, with a band featuring Glenn on vocals & bass guitar, JJ Marsh on guitar, Anders Olinder on keyboards and Matt Goom on drums.

Despite his huge talents as a musician and as a songwriter, the 80s were relatively quiet period for Glenn fans, something that was more than made up for in the much more prolific 90s and noughties. In a run of very powerful solo releases, “First Underground Nuclear Kitchen” is one of the best, and an album he was promoting when his 2010 solo tour hit Belgian venue Spirit of 66 in Verviers on October 16, 2010. Spread across Discs 6 and 7, the show kicks off with Hughes-Thrall’s ‘Muscle And Blood’ followed by Trapeze’s ‘Touch My Life’ and ‘Medusa’, the latter covered in 2010 by Black Country Communion. By this time Glenn had built up a very solid and impressive back catalogue of solo releases, and this Belgian show includes ‘Orion’ and ‘Don’t Let Me Bleed’ from 2005’s “Soul Mover”, ‘Can’t Stop The Flood’ from 2001’s “Building The Machine”, ‘You Kill Me’ from 1999’s “The Way It Is” and the title track to 1996’s “Addiction”. In a band featuring Anders Olinder on keyboards, Søren Anderson on guitar and Pontus Engborg on drums, no Glenn show would be complete without revisiting Deep Purple, represented here with ‘Sail Away’ originally from 1974’s “Burn”.

Don Nix - Passing Through (Re-Repost)

Don Nix - Passing Through  - 2008

Don Nix started out as guitar player who fell under the spell of the music brought into Memphis homes on Dewey Phillip’s “Red, Hot, and Blue” radio program. Joining forces with childhood friends guitarist Steve Cropper and bassist Donald “Duck” Dunn, Nix made the switched to saxophone as a member of the Royal Spades. The other horn player was the mercurial Charles “Packy” Axton, a man who loved music almost as much as he loved alcohol. The plot thickens when Axton’s mother, Estelle, forms a partnership with Jim Stewart to open a recording studio fronted by a record store. The operation becomes a focal point of the area’s musical community, eventually becoming the celebrated Stax Record label.

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Nix came from a musical family (his brother, Larry Nix, became a mastering engineer for Stax and for the Ardent Recording Studios in Memphis). Don Nix began his career playing saxophone for the Mar-Keys, which also featured Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and others. The hit instrumental single "Last Night" (composed by the band as a whole) was the first of many successful hits to Nix's credit. Without Nix, the Mar-Keys evolved into Booker T. & the M.G.'s.

As a producer, Nix worked with other artists and producers, such as Leon Russell of Shelter Records; Gary Lewis and the Playboys in Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars; George Harrison, of the Beatles; and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. One notable achievement was his collaboration with Harrison, Russell, and many others in the production of the "Concert for Bangladesh", Nix agreed that he organized backing chorus group for benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in 1971

Throughout his career, Nix worked behind the scenes as producer, arranger, and musician and in other roles for artists including Lonnie Mack, Furry Lewis, Freddie King, Albert King, Delaney, Bonnie & Friends, Isaac Hayes, the Staple Singers, Jeff Beck, Brian May, Eric Clapton, and many others. He wrote and produced albums for solo artists and for groups, such as Don Nix and the Alabama State Troupers, John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, and Larry Raspberry and the Highsteppers.

His song, "Going Down", originally released by the band Moloch on their eponymous album in 1969, has become a rock-and-roll standard, having been covered by Freddie King, Jeff Beck, Deep Purple, JJ Cale, Marc Ford, Chicken Shack, Bryan Ferry, Pearl Jam, Gov't Mule, Sam Kinison, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Satriani, the Who, Led Zeppelin, Sammy Hagar, Joe Bonamassa, Sturgill Simpson, and others. Nix released a version of the song as a single for Elektra Records in 1972. The song "Black Cat Moan" was covered on the 1973 album Beck, Bogert & Appice. The Rolling Stones performed "Goin' Down" with John Mayer and Gary Clark, Jr. live on Pay-Per-View television on December 15, 2012, as part of the Stones' 50th Anniversary Tour.
