Peter Frampton Band - Peter Frampton Forgets The Words

Peter Frampton Band - Peter Frampton Forgets The Words - 2021

Certified rock and roll all-timer Peter Frampton sounds as mighty and timeless as ever on his new all-instrumental album Frampton Forgets the Words. Set to emerge April 23rd, 2021 via UMe, the record captures Frampton and his extremely capable band laying down no-vocal versions of songs from artists ranging from Marvin Gaye and Lenny Kravitz to David Bowie and Sly & The Family Stone. It was co-produced by Frampton and Chuck Ainlay and was recorded and mixed at Frampton’s own Studio Phenix in Nashville, Tennessee. Slinging his famous 1954 Les Paul Phenix, which was lost in a plane crash in 1980 and recovered more than 30 years later, Frampton puts on a tone and phrasing clinic across the set’s ten tracks that proves to the world that his musical gifts are very much alive.

Peter Frampton is, of course, no stranger to rock fans of all generations. At just 18 years old, he co-founded Humble Pie, which was one of the first true supergroups, and went on to work with icons like George Harrison, David Bowie, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ringo Starr. His 1976 album, Frampton Comes Alive!, is still one of the top-selling live records of all time and has been inducted into the 2020 Grammy Hall of Fame. He’s toured with Stevie Nicks, Greg Allman, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, and the Steve Miller Band and has seen his autobiography, Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir, show up on The New York Times Bestsellers list. Frampton has had a stellar career and made an impact on rock music that few can equal. That he continues to operate on a high level is a solid for guitar fans everywhere.

Frampton’s take on Sly & The Family Stone’s “If You Want Me To Stay” opens the new record and immediately shines brightly. The tune’s smooth and funky pocket is an ideal host for Frampton’s single-note melodic lines and skillful solos. He’s highly expressive without ever overplaying and disrupting the moment, an ability more musicians should cultivate. His tone is beautiful and pure, adding much nuance and color to the proceedings and lets his guitar front the band like a vocalist would. Peter Frampton is sweet, lowdown, and compelling from his first note to his last.

Peter Frampton works the same sort of magic on his rendition of Radiohead’s “Reckoner.” It’s not the type of song one would expect him to take a run at but he delivers the goods on it. He’s tasty, atmospheric, and space-conscious at all times, doing just what’s needed to make a proper connection. It’s cool and inspiring to hear Frampton break out of his mainline sound like this so be sure not to miss it. He does fine work on Marvin Gaye’s “One More Heartache,” extracting every bit of melody and vibe the song has to give him. It’s soul, psychedelia, and the blues coexisting in the exact same moment, a recipe that makes a strong drink no matter how you shake it.

Frampton attacks Lenny Kravitz’s brilliant “Are You Gonna Go My Way” with his entire rock and roll heart on display and turns it into the album’s knockout punch. The big riff, soaring melody, and tight groove will push your soul into overdrive and set your body in motion. Frampton is completely in his element on this one and it shows. You can almost hear him smiling. David Bowie’s “Loving The Alien” is as beautiful and unique as Bowie, himself, was and provides us with another spellbinding musical moment. Roxy Music’s “Avalon” and Stevie Wonder’s “I Don’t Know Why” also make the highlight list on this entertaining set. Frampton Forgets the Words is a wonderful release that shows Peter can still strike paydirt on pretty much anything he chooses to play

Paul Stanley's Soul Station - Then And Now

Paul Stanley's Soul Station - Then And Now - 2021

If you're expecting anything resembling a Kiss album from Paul Stanley, then forget it. This is all about his love for Motown, Otis Redding and other soul icons.

The man himself has never hidden an adoration for this style of music, so everything is approached with a sense of authenticity, care. Versions of The Temptations' Just My Imagination and The Miracles' Tracks Of My Tears are breathtaking, Stanley's caressing voice striking the right mood as his backing band offer a beautiful instrumental balance.

There are nine covers and five originals, each delivered with feeling. The standout moments come on Could It Be I'm Falling In Love (originally by The Spinners) and Ooo Baby Baby (Smokey Robinson). Both are stunning tributes to the originals, as well as offering a modern varnish.

Terry Adams - Holy Tweet

Terry Adams - Holy Tweet - 2009

from AMG
NRBQ may have called it a day, but their founder Terry Adams is keeping the group's joyous and slightly loopy legacy alive on his 2009 solo album, Holy Tweet. Recorded with former NRBQ drummer Tom Ardolino and guitarist and bassist Scott Ligon, Holy Tweet doesn't aim to re-create the eclecticism of his old band's best work -- there isn't much in the way of stylistic leaps and bounds here -- but if you loved the pop-oriented rock & roll energy of "Rain at the Drive In," "I Want You Bad," or "Little Floater," then you're sure to like this set, which is dominated by short, straight-ahead tunes built around Adams' sly but sunny vocal personality, buoyant melodies, and superlative keyboard work. Holy Tweet also finds Adams in a slightly libidinous mood on tunes like "Key to My Pants," "Not Tonight, Hon," and "Feet," though he celebrates women in a more traditional manner on the charming "My Girl, My Girl," "Beautiful Lover," and a cover of "Indian Love Call." The album does veer into unexpectedly serious territory near the end with the moody "I'm Alone," and a brief exercise in self-deprecation called "So Disrespected" that coasts to a close after just over a minute. At less than 29 minutes, Holy Tweet seems a little bit thin by contemporary standards, but most of what's here is first-rate pop from one of music's true originals, and when Adams decries musicians who have turned on their muse for a paycheck on "Never Cop Out," he can take pride in the fact he's never done that, and if this album is any indication, he's not about to any time soon.

02. Never Cop Out

Vinnie Colaiuta, Robben Ford & Jimmy Haslip - Jing Chi (Re-post)

Vinnie Colaiuta, Robben Ford & Jimmy Haslip - Jing Chi - 2002

from AMG
No, this isn't a sister project to Wang Chung, it's actually a blistering and very trippy jazz fusion blast by three old vets who've been shedding over the years in Robben Ford's band. The cover of the disc features psychedelic art and the trio's names -- drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, guitarist Ford, and bassist Jimmy Haslip -- in alphabetical order so that listeners don't mistake any one of them for the leader. It's just an intense ensemble disc that draws from feisty blues-rock (dig the blistering free-for-all opener, "The Hong Kong Incident") to cooler atmospheric experiments (the seductive, laid-back "Stan Key.") There are a lot of influences from '60s rock, cult music, Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, down-home funky Delta blues, and a little James Brown kickin' soul as well. The wah-wah-driven, floating atmospheres of "Tengoku" lets listeners know that while these cats can blow heavy, they're happy at times just to kick back and get deep into nostalgia. Ford's balance of intense playing and strong melodicism is effective in keeping people who like good songwriting in the loop at times when it would be just as easy to just jam and forget about any structure. He also adds a decent vocal to "Going Nowhere," which is anchored in Haslip's hypnotic lines. Less effective is Haslip's robotic attempt to be like Sting on the vocal part of the all-atmospheric "In My Dream." That tune is the only real drawback to a very inventive disc of so many moods and such powerful playing.

02. Stan Key
03. Tengoku
04. Crazy House
05. Going Nowhere
06. Go Figure

Paul Pesco ‎– Make It Reality

Paul Pesco ‎– Make It Reality - 1989

Guitarist / singer-songwriter / composer / producer Paul Pesco’s resume reads like a “Who’s Who” of heavy music industry giants including Steve Winwood, Michael Bolton, Jennifer Lopez, Joan Baez, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Alejandro Sanz, Roberta Flack, Mariah Carey, Hall & Oates, C+C Music Factory, Annie Lennox, Alicia Keys, and too many more to name here.

Suffice it to say that once you see and hear him, you’ll understand why Paul has been sought out by so many great musicians for so long. Although you may not know Paul Pesco by name, you’ve likely heard his music. In fact, Paul has been, and is still, among the most prolific and sought-after session musicians since he began playing professionally in the early 1980s, including several gigs for a young performer named Madonna, who recognized his talent and hired him to record some sessions with her. In 1982 Paul toured with the band Atlantic Starr, famous for its R&B and pop hits “Secret Lover” and “Always”.

After the tour, Madonna, now a rising starlet, recruited Paul to play guitar on her self-titled debut album. Paul then joined the synthpop duo The System and is credited with helping to launch the group’s career. Soon after, and throughout the 80s, Paul was known as one of the go-to session musician for a host of high-profile artists and his career flourished.
