Russell Bizzett - Tommy Bolin Tribute

Russell Bizzett - Tommy Bolin Tribute - 2007

From cduniverse.com

Born in Sioux City Iowa, Russell grew up in a family of musicians and started playing drums on his father's knee at age 5. Both grandfathers were professional musicians. His mother's father was a "boogie-woogie" piano player and his father's father was a jazz trumpet player and big band orchestra leader. His father was a jazz drummer who played with the "Ink Spots". His two brothers were a trumpet player and a sax player, and both played drums as well. His love for drums drove him to pursue this calling. At 12 he started playing gigs at his grandfather's nightclub and by the time he was 19 he was touring with Chuck Berry. The following year he toured with Muddy Waters. He moved to New York City and studied with Roy Haynes as well as attended jazz workshops in Harlem. From 1974 to 1976 he toured and recorded with rock legend, Tommy Bolin. In 1977 he studied East Indian rythms with Colin Walcott at Naropa Institute, Boulder Colorado. From 1979-1981 he toured with jazz legend, Freddy Hubbard and took part in the 1981 Bo Diddly tour. 1982-1990 he toured with Jose Feliciano. He recorded for the Laverne & Shirley Show, under Bennett Salvey, the Merv Griffin Show under Mort Lindsey, musical director between 1983 and 1985 during down time from touring. Later he also recorded for the Northern Exposure TV series. The Independent film, "Stanley's Gig" also featured his talents on the sound track. He toured with French pop icon, Michel Jonasz from 1997 to 1998. Studied with International jazz drummer, Billy Higgins in 1998. Between tours he spent his time recording and performing in the LA area.

He has worked and recorded with a large variety of artists including Jimmy Smith, Billy Preston, Robben Ford, Jeff Berlin, Raul De Sousa, Jose Jose, Carol Kaye, Jane Getz, Eric Reed, Eric Marienthal, Wilton Felder, Rob Mullins, Ravi Coltrane, Dale Fielder Quartet, Michael Ruff, Mike Miller, the Fowler Brothers Air Pocket Band (former members of the Frank Zappa Band), Michel Danton, Steve Barta, Barry Wedgle, Kim Stone, Tom Scott , Rick Zunigar, George Bohanon, John Heard, Frank Zottoli, Ronald Muldrow, Dwight Trible, Kenny Garrett and many more.

Leon Russell - Stop All That Jazz

Leon Russell - Stop All That Jazz - 1974

Leon Russell has been a major force in music for more than four decades. He began playing the piano when he was just three years old. By the age of 14, he picked up a trumpet, formed his own band, lied about his age and managed to get a gig in a Tulsa nightclub. Over the next few years, he played and toured with various groups and artists that included Jerry Lee Lewis. In 1958, he moved to Los Angeles and shortly thereafter began working with legendary producer Phil Spector as part of the infamous "Wall of Sound." Leon quickly became a much sought after session player, recording with or writing songs for The Byrds, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, Herb Alpert, Barbra Streisand, and Frank Sinatra. By the early sixties, he was playing with Gary Paxton (Hollywood Argyles), Bobby "Boris" Pickett (Monster Mash/Cryptkickers) and David Gates (later of Bread.) Russell's solo career leapt forward when Russell and Denny Cordell assembled the all-star 43-member entourage for Joe Cocker's notorious "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" American tour. Leon and his band, The Shelter People, were featured prominently on Cocker's cover of the Box Top's "The Letter," (a top 10 hit in late spring of 1970). Shortly afterward, Leon and Denny Cordell formed Shelter Records and released the first Leon Russell album. Leon continued to accept high-profile invitations for session work, playing with the Rolling Stones, Dave Mason, and Bob Dylan. On August 1, 1971, he was featured with George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan in the "Concert For Bangladesh", at New York's Madison Square Garden. READ MORE HERE

Terry & The Pirates - Rockpalast

Terry & The Pirates - Rockpalast West Coast Legends Vol. 5 - 2009 (DVDA)

It's going on twenty eight years since Terry & The Pirates went on their whirlwind seventy two hour tour of Europe to play three gigs. Since that time both John Cipollina and Nicky Hopkins have passed away, and over the ensuing years with all of the hard rocking and partying that has  transpired and considering just the passage of time alone, it may have left some the band's memories a little hazy. I know if John was still around he'd probably be able to write a book about it, but since he's not we'll try to tell you the story as best we can.

The cold weather conditions of going to Germany in the dead of winter is not the most perfect setting for a bunch of musicians who were accustomed to the bright sunshine and idyllic hills of picturesque Marin County in Northern California; but when you live to play the music that you love, you really don't have any choice, but to go and follow your muse.

Bill Belmont from Rag Baby Records helped set things up for Terry. It was December of 1982 when Terry & The Pirates embarked on what is now jokingly referred to by the band as the "Torture Tour" and for good reason - it was grueling.

This tour was going to be a little strange because their guitarist Greg Douglass had prior tour commitments with the Greg Kihn Band and would be unable to be a part of it, so Terry Dolan, John Cipollina, David Hayes, Greg Elmore and Nicky Hopkins would have to go on without him.

The night before they were to leave for Germany their wives and girlfriends made sure to "keep the boys busy" until the wee wee hours to help ensure that they would behave themselves while on tour. No one is talking as to whether this tactic worked or not and maybe that's a good thing, but the general consensus was if they weren't traveling, getting a quick bite to eat, doing a sound check or playing a gig, they were trying to get a little shut eye in between.

Jakko Jakszyk - Mustard Gas And Roses

Jakko Jakszyk - Mustard Gas And Roses - 1994

By Brian Steffensen, progarchives.com

It is great to have Jakko on the Archive at last. This is a wonderful Prog related album with Canterbury Scene influences. I say this because some of the tracks are clearly more pop rlated, but definitely with heay progressive rock influences. This music is very much in the Gaskin and Stewart / Caravan category of Prog Rock. There are some incredible instrumentals here. Just listen to "Devil's Dictionary" and you'll realise that this some of the best melodic jazz fusion meets Canterbury prog rock around. "when We Go Home" is another classic with well constructed melody and rhythm patterns with meaningful lyrics. Some of the other tracks do not come to standard of the two tracks, but are still very enjoyable to anyone appreciates good rock music.
