E hoje, pra começar bem a semana e o mês, mais um álbum que até ontem era um raridade. O negócio era tão difícil que sequer um videozinho no youtube eu consegui encontrar. Então, acabei me metendo a levantar 2 sons, como amostra. Apanhei mas consegui.

Álbum originalmente lançado em 1976, recebeu em 1994 uma reedição em CD junto com o Skyrider (1979) e desde então virou lenda. Nunca ninguém viu, nunca ninguém ouviu e cheguei a ver quem pedisse U$ 300,00 (eu disse 300, não 10) no ebay ou AQUI um pouco mais baratinho.

Eu poderia dizer que revirei o mundo atrás de um link, que vendi meu carro pra comprar um surrado LP, fiz acordo com a máfia (kkk) ou até que entreguei a alma ao diabo pra conseguir este post, mas, a verdade é que agora ele está de volta nas lojas digitais por uma bagatela, o preço de 3 geladas com os amigos. Ou seja, quem vendeu por um preço escorjante, vendeu. Quem não vendeu, não vende mais esse que é um dos melhores álbuns deste artista.

Eu não sei quem toca no disco, mas dizem que George Harrison (não creditado) fêz os slide-guitar.

Só como registro, Skyrider (outro que era uma raridade) também está de volta ao catálogo.

Affinity and Angel Air's revival of the band via several reissues also provides one of the more interesting reunion stories of recent years. A band that germinated in the hallowed halls of Sussex University back in the early sixties with future bass supremo Mo Foster, their story has been renovated by several excellent archive releases in recent years including singer Linda Hoyle's solo album.

Looking back at my review in 2004 of 'Affinity 65-67' I suggested 'how about a reunion?' The occasion for that came seven years later in September 2011 to tie in with the University's 50th birthday celebrations and brought together original band members and in addition respected jazz-rockers, pianist Gary Husband and guitarist Ray Russell.

But what made the band so intriguing back in the day is completely absent from this pristine modern recording. Strangely the setlist reads (and sounds) like a K-Tel covers collection stuck somewhere in the late 1960s. Even Linda Hoyle fails to light the touch paper during ‘Fever' although her other vocal piece ‘You Don't Know What Love Is' is a standout.

It could be argued that if the band had played their own music - even, dare them, the whole of their 1970 eponymous album - it may have alienated some of the alumni present and put dampers on the revelry. But for those who warmed to the band's smoky sixties charm with copious amounts of Hammond it would have at least provided an excuse to roll out the Rizlas and do Louis Balfour impressions.

One Day I'm Going to Soar is a concept album with an unreliable narrator, a comeback LP about being stuck in a self-defeating cycle, and a soul record dedicated partly to exposing its singer as an untrustworthy shit. For devotees of bandleader Kevin Rowland-- and there are many, despite the last Dexys album having come out 27 years ago-- this is exactly what they've been hoping to hear. For anyone else, an hour in Rowland's company will be more of an effort, though probably one worth making. The new record picks up where 1985's Don't Stand Me Down left off. That album was a commercial disaster that became a cult favorite for its emotional complexity and its formal daring, as tracks cut mid-song into long conversations between Rowland and bandmates. Some of these were awkwardly revealing chit-chat, some statements of belief. Dexys Midnight Runners, as they were known in the 80s, always had a reputation for passion and honesty, but there was an uncomfortable intimacy about the Don't Stand Me Down work which made it their most difficult but gripping record.
