Kak - Kak

Kak - Kak - 1968 (RE 1999)

Kak was an American psychedelic rock band, based in San Francisco between 1967 and 1969.

The band was formed in Davis, California, in late 1967, by singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist Gary Lee Yoder, and lead guitarist Dehner Patten. Both had previously been members of The Oxford Circle, a garage rock and early psychedelic band. Adding Joe Dave Damrell on bass and sitar, and Chris Lockheed on drums and harpsichord, they started performing together as Kak around San Francisco. After meeting songwriter and record producer Gary Grelecki, they were signed by Epic Records.

The band released their only album, Kak, in 1968, with all songs written or co-written by Yoder, some with Grelecki, in a style influenced by such artists as Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Grateful Dead, and Donovan. Reviewer Richie Unterberger characterizes the music as "minor-league San Francisco psychedelic rock". Two singles, "Everything's Changing" and "I've Got Time", were also released but were unsuccessful.

Damrell left the band before the end of 1968, and Kak split up early in 1969. After one solo single, Yoder later joined Blue Cheer.

Although, at the time, Kak's records were not successful, they later became highly collectable, and the album was bootlegged. It was legitimately reissued in 1999, as Kak-Ola, with additional tracks including demo recordings and solo tracks by Yoder

Sabicas - Rock Encounter With Joe Beck

Sabicas - Rock Encounter With Joe Beck - 1973
by AMG
An instrumental album of pretty good flamenco guitar overlaid with run-of-the-mill blues-rock. Though it might have made a splash in the late '60s, when "Beck's Bolero" and "Days of Future Passed" were blazing new trails in classical-rock fusion, by 1972 progressive rockers like Steve Howe were incorporating flamenco into rock at a much higher level of sophistication than anything found here. Beck and Sabicas don't really merge -- flamenco pieces segue into rock-band instrumentals, with Sabicas only occasionally peeking through when Beck isn't flooring an effects pedal. As such, it falls into the same category as Deep Purple's similarly striated "Concerto for Group and Orchestra." Still, opener "Inca Song" kicks out a satisfying jam and features a pleasingly wobbly bassline by Tony Levin. Only "Flamenco Rock" shows a truly successful marriage of the two styles, with Beck wailing effectively over a fluttering guitar part by Sabicas.

Jorma Kaukonen - Quah

Jorma Kaukonen - Quah - 1974

Quah is the first solo album by Jorma Kaukonen of Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane. The album was recorded with Tom Hobson. The initial plan was to have side-A be Kaukonen and side-B be Hobson. However, RCA felt that Hobson's recordings would not be accepted by the public. Initially the record was planned to be released in mid-1973, but because of the issues with Hobson, Kaukonen returned to the studio to record new tracks for side B in May 1974. Only "Blue Prelude" and "Sweet Hawaiian Sunshine" of the original 1974 release feature Hobson's lead vocal, although he also plays guitar on "I'll Let You Know Before I Leave." On the CD reissue, Hobson is featured on all bonus tracks except for "Lord Have Mercy."

In 1980, Grunt Records reissued the album with a different cover that used the photographs that were originally used inside the gatefold. In 1987, Relix Records released the album under license from RCA. It was released on vinyl and was one of the first CDs released by an independent record label in the USA. The first Relix version was pressed in Switzerland, then Japan and finally manufactured in the USA. Relix also released a remastered and graphically revised version in the late 1990s with computer improved tracks from the original masters. BMG (incorporating the former RCA) re-released the original album on CD in 2003, along with the bonus tracks featuring Hobson.

It was voted number 1 in the All-Time 50 Long Forgotten Gems in the third edition of Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums (2000).

Gil Scott-Heron - Pieces of a Man

Gil Scott-Heron - Pieces of a Man - 1971

Gil Scott-Heron's 1971 album Pieces of a Man set a standard for vocal artistry and political awareness that few musicians will ever match.

His unique proto-rap vocal style influenced a generation of hip-hop artists, and nowhere is his style more powerful than on the classic "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised." Even though the media -- the very entity attacked in this song -- has used, reused, and recontextualized the song and its title so many times, the message is so strong that it has become almost impossible to co-opt.

Musically, the track created a formula that modern hip-hop would follow for years to come: bare-bones arrangements featuring pounding basslines and stripped-down drumbeats. Although the song features plenty of outdated references to everything from Spiro Agnew and Jim Webb to The Beverly Hillbillies, the force of Scott-Heron's well-directed anger makes the song timeless. More than just a spoken word poet, Scott-Heron was also a uniquely gifted vocalist.

On tracks like the reflective "I Think I'll Call It Morning" and the title track, Scott-Heron's voice is complemented perfectly by the soulful keyboards of Brian Jackson. On "Lady Day and John Coltrane," he not only celebrates jazz legends of the past in his words but in his vocal performance, one that is filled with enough soul and innovation to make Coltrane and Billie Holiday nod their heads in approval.

More than three decades after its release, Pieces of a Man is just as -- if not more -- powerful and influential today as it was the day it was released
