The Will Johns Band - Hooks & Lines

The Will Johns Band - Hooks & Lines - 2012

Striking a masterful balance between old soul & modern flair, Will Johns is one of the most distinctive and exciting British Blues performers in the world today.

Born in 1973, this is a man with the music in his blood, but it’s hardly surprising given his pedigree. His parents are actress/model Paula Boyd, sister of Pattie, and record producer Andy Johns (who worked with the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton), and his uncles include Eric Clapton, Mick Fleetwood, George Harrison and Glyn Johns.

Will started playing the guitar as a teenager, with plenty of encouragement from Uncle Eric. Like any great musician though, it wasn’t long before Johns’ own creativity kicked-in and he soon developed his own unique sound that is both cutting-edge and steeped in blues history.

Will is now a hugely respected songwriter & performer, having released three solo albums and having been nominated for ‘Best Original Blues Song’ by the British Blues Awards for three consecutive years.

A testament to his authenticity & skill, Johns has also performed alongside luminaries such as Eric Clapton, Nile Rodgers, Ronnie Wood, Jack Bruce, Pete Brown, Mick Taylor, Glenn Hughes, Robin Ford, Dennis Chambers and Terry Reid. Particular highlights include his performance of ‘White Room’ at the commemorative concert, “An Evening for Jack” Bruce at Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 2017, as well as performing “Crossroads” alongside Uncle Eric at the 2020 Ginger Baker Memorial Concert.

Ted Lucas - Ted Lucas

Ted Lucas - Ted Lucas - 1975

Sometime in the early ’70s, probably after 1972 when Motown pulled up its Detroit stakes and decamped to Los Angeles, Ted Lucas, a guitar wizard who’d studied with Ravi Shankar and played in psych rock bands around Detroit, went up into his attic to record an album. Lucas, who had decided to mostly swear off any attempt at fame, content to pay his bills playing on Motown sessions (he was the label’s in-house “Indian instrument expert”) and working out a new mode of playing guitar by himself and for himself, multi-tracked his voice — somewhere between Nick Drake and any other number of haunted presences like Skip Spence and Syd Barrett — and laid down Ted Lucas, intending to self-distribute it. He got some records made in 1975, and sold enough to finance a repress in 1977. Lucas would swear off recording for anyone else other than himself, and fade in obscurity, before dying in 1992 of unspecified causes.

Robby Krieger - The Ritual Begins At Sundown

Robby Krieger - The Ritual Begins At Sundown - 2020

The Ritual Begins At Sundown is Krieger’s first solo album in ten years, with faint notes of psychedelic rock and blues which attempt to mask the rhythmic jazz fusion which this album is defined as. Each note is meticulously played and layered on to synchronize with the rest of the track.

Krieger’s instrumental album was influenced by many others while being made. Many of the tracks include former band members of legendary musician Frank Zappa who were crucial in the creation of this album. As Krieger describes in an earlier Facebook post, “We took the songs on the road, and played them live night after night in clubs, working out all the kinks and the got better and better.”

The album opener, “What Was That?” is people’s first taste of melodic jazz interwoven with Krieger’s soloing, blending with minimal effort. As his first track in a decade, this song fills that lonesome gap which lacked the embedded musical talent of Krieger and his guitar. The second song, “Slide Home,” is a suave five-minute track meant for a simpler time. Krieger’s muffled guitar riffs overshadow the faint tune of the rest of the band. This song is all about the guitar slide, with smooth transitions and a beautiful outro.

“The Drift” is funky and fantastic, with saxophone riffs meant for tiptoeing through the night. Suspenseful yet pleasing, this track’s cascading instrumental riffs bounce off of one another, as if in conversation. In similar style and taste, “Hot Head” provides the same melodious tunes with a bit more rhythm. The interaction of the brass instruments and Krieger’s guitar is next-level jazz fusion.

Zappa’s legendary producer, Arthur Barrow, lent his talent to this album in the form of an old classic. With a handful of other Zappa teammates like Jock Ellis (Trombone), Sal Marquez (Trumpet) and Tommy Mars (Keys), Krieger fuses his soloist mastery with a Frank Zappa classic, “Chunga’s Revenge.” As it is difficult to place one’s own musical style on the talent of another legend, Krieger and the band deserve significant kudos on this brilliantly executed rendition.

To revamp old classics, Krieger also chose to include a new version of “Yes, The River Knows,” from his former days as The Doors guitarist and songwriter for this track. After the passing away of Doors pianist Ray Manzarek in 2013, Krieger was inspired to re-light this song’s fire (bad Doors pun) as an ode to Manzarek’s stellar piano part in the original recordings. In an interview with Forbes Magazine, Krieger states, “we threw some other stuff to make it more modern, I guess. But the piano part is exactly the same as Ray played it.” The song is beautiful, and a great ode to Manzarek’s immense talent and impact on Krieger’s musical career.

To follow this, “The Hitch” turns the RPMs up a bit for this album. With more blues guitar riffs, Krieger brings back his superlative riffing in an effortless dirty-Jazz style. To clean up after is “Dr Noir,” a polished and refined track of lustful jazz brass and soulful rhythm. “Bianca’s Dream” brings more playfulness into the mix with dramatic lows and reaching highs. Krieger guitar loops around the track with minimal direction and seamless execution. As the closer, “Screen Junkie” is what one could expect from this instrumental album. With a laid-back vibe and a harmonious background, this track’s groovy intentions reaffirm people’s definition of jazz with the distinct stamp of Robby Krieger.

The Ritual Begins At Sundown is infused with significant experimentation. Tweaked to perfection, Krieger and his ensemble have manifested a piece of pure enjoyment for his plethora of listeners which longed for his sound the past ten years.

Albatross - The Reunion Show (Barry MC Cabe) (re-post)

Albatross - The Reunion Show (Barry MC Cabe) - 2013

The first lineup of Albatross was formed in the mid-70s by Barry McCabe (guitar) and showband veteran John Smith in the village of Virginia, Co.Cavan. They were named after the Fleetwood Mac song. Barry's two main influences were Peter Green and Rory Gallagher. The highlight of this early period was undoubtedly supporting Horslips at the Farmer's Ballroom in Virginia in 1976.

By the early 1980s the band was a blues trio based in Dublin with ex Zen Alligators Gary Eglington on bass. They toured relentlessly across Northern Europe and Scandanvia throughout the 80s, recording several live albums.

The Ides Of March - Play On

The Ides Of March - Play On - 2019

Over the past 55 years, Chicago's own The Ides Of March have earned their place in Rock history with their stirring brass-driven platinum hit Vehicle . Ides singer/guitarist Jim Peterik, who wrote and sang that listener favorite, went on to co-write numerous other Top Ten smashes, including Hold On Loosely for .38 Special, and The Eye Of The Tiger for Survivor. His songwriting has garnered Jim a GrammyTM, a People s Choice Award, and an OscarTM nomination. Now comes the Ides new album Play On with 14 fresh songs, drawing on the wide variety of genres the Ides have mastered over their 55 year career. CD Contains 15 tracks including the classic original single release of "Vehicle"

Jim Peterik reached deep into his talent, bringing together and intermingling the influences and directions responsible for so many hit tunes, sometimes composing with fellow members of the Ides, and selected hit writers to create this collection that showcases the wide range of musicianship inherent in the band.

Of course, Play On features the trademark Brass sound responsible for Vehicle s continued rotation on radio stations worldwide. As important to their identity are their skillful vocal harmonies, which leap from a sweet simmer to incendiary intensity. These vocals are heard in every Play On song.

Hit producer Fred Mollin drew the best out of the 8-man group which includes the four original members, who came together in 1964. The Ides chose to invite several of their Superstar friends to celebrate their 55-year musical journey. Mark Farner, original lead singer and guitarist of Grand Funk, lends his distinctive voice and lead guitar to the hard-rocking Swagger . Blues superstar guitarist Joe Bonamassa weaves tasty licks throughout The Cover Up .

Cathy Richardson of Jefferson Starship shares an impassioned duet with Jim on Blue Storm Rising , while David Pack former lead singer of Ambrosia, pairs with Jim for an exquisite duet on A Song About Mary . Bo Bice of American Idol and Blood Sweat & Tears fame tears it up on Love Or Something Like It .

Sax phenom Mindi Abair adds her unique style to Friends Like You . Paul Shaffer of David Letterman s Band contributes a cool electric piano vibe to Rule Of Three . Completing the celebrity guest roster is Tom Toad Doody of fellow Chicago favorites The Cryan Shames, whose heartfelt voice graces Cornerstone .

Jimmie Spheeris - An Evening with Jimmie Spheeris

Jimmie Spheeris - An Evening with Jimmie Spheeris - 2000

JIMMIE SPHEERIS was a circus kid. His mother and father owned and operated a roving carnival called the Majick Empire. His early years were spent moving from town to town "living like gypsies", as he often put it. And when you listen to his music you can hear the inspiration from those early years of colorful transience.

After the death of his father (shot by a belligerent carnival-goer), Jimmies family eventually settled in Southern California, where he won his first guitar in a music contest in school at the age of 14. And although Jimmies teachers were in awe of his abundant talent, they kicked him out of school for his long hair. Afterwards and long before musical success, Jimmie used to assemble kaleidoscopes with longtime friend Jackson Browne - as Jimmie said, "so we could make enough money to go to San Francisco to be hippies."

In the late 60s, Jimmie moved to New York City and lived in heart of its creative haven, The Village. He quickly became friends with Ritchie Havens and other folk rock performers and spent several years developing his songwriting and musical style within that highly artistic atmosphere. It was there that Jimmie was signed to his first record contract with Columbia Records by legendary music man Clive Davis in 1970. In 1971 his first album "Isle Of View" was released and quickly became popular with early underground rock stations. Jimmie will always be remembered as one of the staples of progressive-rock radio. Throughout the 70s his song "I Am The Mercury" was always in heavy rotation at those early underground stations.

Jimmies second album "The Original Tap Dancing Kid" was produced by Felix Cavilar, lead singer (and Hammond B-3 wizard) with the "Rascals". Released in 1972, and as with "Isle Of View", this album was recorded in New York City. Although this album was a bit more polished than his first, Jimmies songwriting was rapidly evolving - with songs like "Moon On The Water" and "Streets Of The Harbour" it was undeniable that Jimmie Spheeris was one of the most innovative artists of his day.

By the time he released his third (and some say his most magical) album in 1975, "The Dragon Is Dancing", Jimmie Spheeris had evolved his style into a very colorful dark mystical place. His lyrics had become more introspective - it is in this album he sings of his childhood carnival days and the darker side of humanity. This album was produced in Los Angeles by legendary producer, Henry Lewy. While recording this album it was not unusual for Jimmies friends, Joni Mitchell and Peggy Lee to show up at the studio. This was a very exciting time in Jimmies life with a new record label (Epic) and a new manager and a new place to call home, where he would spend the rest of his days - Venice Beach.

To Jimmie, living in Venice Beach was like coming home. The carnival-like atmosphere reminded him of his youth on the road with the circus. And Jimmie fit right in with the wild street characters, the seedy bars and the ocean. It was in Venice Jimmie began writing the songs which would become his fourth album, "Ports Of The Heart". Also, this was a time of much touring and during one of his one-niters, Jimmie fell head over heels in love with the city of New Orleans. Again, it was like he had found a second home - another place that seemed to practice the carnival-like lifestyle he was accustomed to. You can hear the influence of Venice and New Orleans in this album. Released in 1976 and produced by his longtime friend from the "Isle Of View" album, David Campbell, "Ports Of The Heart" was full of hope and future.

After touring a few years with The Moody Blues and right before the release of his fifth (still unreleased) album, Jimmie Spheeris was killed on July 4, 1984 in Venice Beach by a drunk driver. On that day, the world lost one of its truest musical clowns. Jimmie knew why he was here - his purpose was to make us laugh, cry, feel and maybe see that our lives can be much more than the dreary lives we are taught to live - that there are wonderful universes out there for the taking. There will never be anyone quite like him - long lanky legs, baggy pants, mystical, abundantly aesthetic, charismatic, a true carnie, a true artist - and probably the most magical singer/songwriter of our time.

Glenn Hughes - Official Bootleg Box Set Volume Three 1995-2010 - 2020

Glenn Hughes - Official Bootleg Box Set Volume Three 1995-2010 - 2020

This third volume of unreleased live concerts from Glenn’s solo career kicks off with a show from his 1995 tour to support his then latest album “Feel”, plus the previous year’s “From Now On… “, with an (almost) hometown solo appearance at the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton on 17th November 1995 (CD1 & CD2). Spread across two discs, the set kicks off with songs from what were Glenn’s more recent solo offerings, with ‘Big Time’, ‘The Liar’ and ‘Push’, before Trapeze classics ‘Coast To Coast’ and ‘Way Back To The Bone’. It wouldn’t be a Glenn show without featuring Deep Purple Mk3 and Mk4 hits, with ‘This Time Around’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ and ‘Gettin’ Tighter’ from 1975’s “Come Taste The Band”, ‘You Fool No One’ and the title track from 1974’s “Burn” plus the title track from “Stormbringer”.

The following day Glenn made a live appearance at the more intimate LA2 in London, on 18th November 1995 (CD3). Unsurprisingly, much of the set replicates that from Wolverhampton, and no bad thing as Glenn revisits songs from across his long and varied musical journey, from Trapeze to Purple to his solo renaissance in the 1990s.

13 years later saw Glenn performing an exclusive acoustic show at Esquires in Bedford on 3rd May 2008 (CD4), celebrating the 40th anniversary of Deep Purple. As well as the expected Purple classics ‘Mistreated’, ‘This Time Around’ / ‘Owed to “G”‘, ‘Holy Man’, ‘You Keep On Moving’ and ‘Stormbringer’, Glenn also includes a rare airing of his debut solo single ‘I Found A Woman’ from his debut solo LP, “Play Me Out”. Glenn even includes a cover of The Moody Blues’ ‘Nights In White Satin’.

The final two discs feature a show recorded at the Spring & Airbrake, Belfast on 9th October 2010 (CD5 & 6). Kicking off with Hughes – Thrall’s ‘Muscle And Blood’, the solo songs ‘Orion’ from “Soul Mover”, ‘You Kill Me’ from “The Way It Is” and ‘Can’t Stop The Flood’ from “Building The Machine” are included in a show that climaxes with the title track to the “Addiction” album and finally Deep Purple’s “Burn”.

Purple Records have also reissued expanded collections of Glenn’s solo catalogue, including “Play Me Out”, “Feel”, “Addiction”, “The Way It Is”, “Return Of Crystal Karma” and “Building The Machine”. Glenn Hughes also appears on the reissued 3CD set of 1974’s “The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper’s Feast” by Roger Glover And Friends, also on Purple Records.

Eamonn McCormack ‎- Kindred Spirits

Eamonn McCormack ‎– Kindred Spirits - 2008

Eamonn was born in the center of Dublin, the capital city of Ireland and was raised on a North side Suburb where he started out on the acoustic guitar at eight years of age. Earliest influences included Slade, Cat Stevens, Neil Young and Rory Gallagher. By twelve he was singing along with his guitar and performing at Church Folk Masses.

Soon, finding the church music somewhat restricting the young teenager acquired his first electric guitar (a Guild Star fire) then progressed to lead guitar and joined a local garage cover band prior to playing his first paid gig. By now influences extending to Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Thin Lizzy and Dutch group Focus.

At sixteen Eamonn performed live on a national Irish radio show. Around this time he also won a major high school competition performing his own material. After a short stint playing in various bands throughout Ireland, Eamonn headed off to the U.S.A. where he performed extensively. There he broadened his musical horizons, gained vital stage experience and absorbed fresh American music and cultural influences. This blended together nicely with his earlier influences.

Returning to Ireland after four years traveling and performing in the States Eamonn was by now developing a very unique sound and style all of his own which solidified whilst Eamonn performed extensively establishing himself across Europe, the hard way, through a grueling tour schedule. But soon his efforts garnered him the reputation, as he and his band became Major European Festival Favorites including the prestige Rockpalast in Germany and Parkpop in Holland (500,000 people).

During this period Eamonn signed with Universe Productions/Virgin Records and SPV records worldwide. Recorded three critically acclaimed studio albums confirming that an exciting young up and coming World Class Guitarist was emerging out of Ireland.

Entering the new Millennium saw the young Irish Guitarist play, tour and record with many of his earliest guitar influences and heroes such as Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter, Jan Akkerman, Walter Trout, Popa Chubby, Pat Travers, and Nils Lofgren. As well as opening for everyone from Robert Plant to ZZ Top…
