Hot Tuna - 2015-11-20 Beacon Theatre, New York, NY (Live)

Hot Tuna - 2015-11-20 Beacon Theatre, New York, NY (Live) - 2016

On a pleasant Friday night in the fall, Hot Tuna celebrated Jorma Kaukonen's 75th birthday at the classic 3 - tiered Beacon Theater in New York City. The place was packed and there was a special buzz in the atmosphere. There were rumors floating around that there will be special guests to join Jorma and Jack (Casady) on stage, and they proved to be right on the mark. After an opening solo number by Jorma, classic blues artist John Hammond joined him on harmonica - along with Jack on bass - for a 3 song acoustic mini-set. It was really a nice start to the evening. Now it was time to plug in and pick up the pace, and for this they brought in drummer Justin Guip, who has collaborated extensively in the past with Levon Helm. They worked their way through a dynamic set that riled up the crowd. It eventually became evident that in the floor seats you were going to have to stand! Jorma showed off some really rocking lead solos on his Gibson Firebird guitar. Set two featured special guests Larry Campbell - a seasoned multi-instrumentalist who toured with Bob Dylan for many years - and his wife, singer Teresa Williams. Larry played an arsenal of instruments in the set including mandolin, fiddle, pedal steel, and guitar. Teresa's lovely voice was showcased in great versions of "Wade in the Water", "Big River", and many others. The encore was the classic "Sugaree" from the Grateful Dead songbook. The show sent everyone home satisfied and wishing they had tickets for Saturday night also.

Simon Kirke - All Because of You

Simon Kirke - All Because of You - 2016

From GetReadyToRock
Following Bad Company’s successful touring in 2016, Kirke now unleashes his third solo album.  The only clue to his illustrious past is a cover of ‘Feel Like Making Love’ and only on ‘Troubled Road’ does he break any sweat.

‘All Because Of You’ is a pleasant song-driven album and should be assessed on its own merits, rather than with deferment to his essentially hard rock heritage.  The truth is, Kirke co-wrote many songs with Free and then Bad Company.  He slipped off the radar only when Bad Company folded in the late 1990s and having successfully fought alcoholism and drug abuse surfaced sporadically with the Ringo Starr All-Starr Band and then Bad Company when that band reformed.

The material here is mature, somewhat introspective, and fairly consistent.  It’s the proverbial easy listen, driven by Kirke’s vocal and acoustic guitar rather than his drum kit.  Arguably, it belongs to a different age when albums clocked in at sub-40 minutes and we had half-decent daytime radio.  In spirit the album is closest to the likes of Harry Chapin and Gordon Lightfoot which places the album’s feel firmly in the seventies.

Consistency is always an issue with solo albums as it is very easy for artists to seize the opportunity to display a variety of styles and influences.  To his credit, Simon has kept things on an even keel.

There’s a McCartney-esque ‘Blackbird’ influence on ‘Maria’ (with attractive string orchestration) whilst ‘Into The Light’ features a gospel choir.  However, I can’t help thinking what an album this would be if all the tracks matched the killer class of ‘Melting On Madison’.  Cue for a widescreen song placement?

The inclusion of ‘Friends In The Woods’ may seem somewhat trite and disposable, it was written for Kirke’s first child some years ago.  It merely contributes to the feeling that Kirke is wearing his heart on his sleeve throughout this album.  I mean does he have to pander to expectation or modern taste and preference?

It’s about time that we all sat up and took notice of Simon Kirke away from the drum stool.  After a couple of tentative solo efforts, ‘All Because Of You’ will help wider recognition of a talented performer with a gold-plated past who for a time looked into an abyss of despair and who ultimately emerged  with  a clearer and re-vitalised vision.

Blossom Toes - What On Earth - Rarities 1967-69

Blossom Toes -  What On Earth - Rarities 1967-69 - 2009
The Blossom Toes were the first really professional band of guitarist Brian Godding (Centipede, Mike Westbrook, Magma, Mirage, Solid Gold Cadillac, Kevin Coyne, etc.) and while their two albums are a bit dated in terms of production, they are pretty fine albums for their time. This is the first-ever legit release of rare tracks and assorted unheard emphemera by this classic psychedelic-avant-pop outfit all of which is in much better sound (semi-rough, but pretty good for 'these sorts of releases' and completely listenable and enjoyable).

"Following the November 1967 release of We Are Ever So Clean, beloved '60s UK psych group Blossom Toes spent 18 months gigging hard and recording numerous tracks that, for one reason or another, never saw the light of day -- until now. Culled from long-lost acetates and tapes, What On Earth spans home demos and studio recordings, including previously-unheard songs as well as early renditions of material that appeared on their July 1969 swansong, If Only For A Moment. Ranging from delicate ballads to heavy psychedelic rock, the set is a veritable treasure-trove for the band's legion of admirers

The Spencer Davis Group -Taking Time Out - Complete Recordings 1967-1969

The Spencer Davis Group -Taking Time Out - Complete Recordings 1967-1969 - 2016

3 CD boxset of all the 60s post-Steve Winwood recordings by R n B/Psych Popsters the Spencer Davis Group, including two LPs “With Their New Face On” and “Funky”, singles and outtakes plus unreleased BBC Sessions.

On the face of it, the Spencer Davis Group should have been relishing the year ahead as 1967 dawned. They had reached the top spot in the UK charts in each of the previous two years (with “Keep On Running” and “Somebody Help Me”) and had just narrowly missed it again with the number two hit “Gimme Some Lovin”, which also made the US top 10. On top of that they had just pipped the Rolling Stones to the title of “Best R n B Group” in the then prestigious NME Awards. Yet all was far from rosy in the SDG camp…..

Wonderboy Steve Winwood, the band’s youthful face and voice, was growing restless with what he saw as the slightly old fashioned approach of the band in the face of the burgeoning Psychedelic scene and wished to move on to a band of his own construct that would follow that pathway. After another hit single in early 1967 with “I’m A Man” he would head “back to nature” with his band Traffic and leave group leader Spencer Davis with a headache and a sizable poser. How would he replace Winwood (and indeed his brother Muff too who also absconded at the same time) and even if he did manage this effectively would it still sound the death knell for a pop group seemingly on the precipice of huge success?

VA - Through a Faraway Window - A Tribute to Jimmy Silva

VA - Through a Faraway Window - A Tribute to Jimmy Silva - 2010

The brilliant lyrics and jangling melodies of San Francisco Bay Area native Jimmy Silva are a superb fit for the often-abused tribute album format. Over the course of four luminous solo albums for PopLlama and East Side Digital, Silva would frequently step aside and let the lead-vocal spotlight fall upon singers as diverse as Sal Valentino of the Beau Brummels or Bill Jedrzejewski or Kim Wonderley, both members of Silva's final band, the Goats.

Jimmy Silva died tragically in Seattle in 1994 at the age of 42 from complications after contracting chicken pox. But his small legion of friends and admirers have never forgotten Silva and his sometimes stirring/often melancholy songs. Like New Testament disciples, they have banded together on From A Faraway Window (SteadyBoy) to celebrate the music their dear friend left behind. Rock journalist Jud Cost and Texas Music Hall of Famer Freddie Steady Krc along with ex-Goats Kim Wonderley and Eric Scott have rounded up selections from Scott McCaughey and Peter Buck of the Minus 5 (and R.E.M.), Jon Auer of the Posies, Roy Loney of the Flamin' Groovies, Freddie Steady Krc of Roky Erickson & the Explosives, Christy McWilson, the Jigsaw Seen, Sal Valentino of the Beau Brummels, Dennis Diken of the Smithereens, the Young Fresh Fellows, John Wesley Harding and Chris Eckman of the Walkabouts in a technicolor, extra-large mural depicting the very best material from the haunting catalog of Jimmy Silva.

RavenEye - Nova

RavenEye - Nova - 2016

Since forming in 2014, RAVENEYE has toured globally, supporting bands such as THE DARKNESS, SLASH, DEEP PURPLE, HALESTORM and BLUES PILLS. The band has headlined tours through Europe and America and has performed at major international rock festivals such as Download (U.K.), Hellfest (France), Azkena Rock (Spain), and will also perform at the Maximus festival in Brazil and Argentina this September. Their incendiary live shows have captivated crowds and put them on the map as a "must-see" live band.

Warren Riker (Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, DOWN, Anders Osborne) engineered RAVENEYE's debut EP, "Breaking Out", and took over as producer to capture the band's true sonic identity on "Nova". Together, they worked at Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey for 25 days and created an eleven-track album that pushed the band beyond its boundaries and into new ground. From the hard-hitting riffs of "Inside", "Madeline" and "Hero" to the raw sounds of "Wanna Feel You" and "Oh My Love" to the stark reality of life and death in "Eternity", "Nova" takes you on a journey of defiance, pain, hate, death and, yes, love.

With songs filled with deep, bluesy grooves and infectious hooks that invoke giants such as LED ZEPPELIN and SOUNDGARDEN , RAVENEYE continues to win fans over around the world with its huge sound and killer live shows. The extensive touring in 2015 laid the ground work for a hungry fan base and, this past April, one year after the release of "Breaking Out", the band debuted on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.

When RAVENEYE formed two years ago, the then-25-year-old Oli Brown, singer and guitarist, had already released four solo albums and toured the world for ten years with legends such as Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Johnny Winter and Joe Satriani.

Don Nix And Alabama State Troupers - Live In San Francisco 1967

Don Nix And Alabama State Troupers - Live In San Francisco 1967 - 2016

from AMG
The Alabama State Troupers was a big-band soul outfit formed by ex-Markey member Don Nix in 1971. Nix cut a solo album, entitled Living by the Days, for Elektra Records in 1971, and put together a touring group consisting of Lonnie Mack -- replaced by Furry Lewis -- Jeannie Greene, and the Mt. Zion Band and Choir. The group embarked on a national tour that took them across the South and West to California, initially to promote Nix's album, but the shows soon took on a life of their own, especially with Lewis -- a veteran bluesman with more than 40 years in the business.

Live in San Francisco is a bootleg real one recorded in october 1971 at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium.

Fifty Foot Hose - Sing Like Scanffold AND Live And Unrealeased (Two Re-Re-Posts)

Fifty Foot Hose - Sing Like Scaffold - 1996

San Francisco’s Fifty Foot Hose were certainly one of the innovators of a sound that took Psychedelia to new heights and was captured on the band’s one record, “Cauldron”. Band leader, Cork Marcheschi, used homemade electronic devices to create crude and experimental soundscapes and instrumental compostitions that were sprinkled throughout the album. However, these passages are not characteristic of the whole albums. “Cauldron” passes through many other styles, which include Folk & Jazz and is anchored by Nancy Blossom’s Grace Slick-esque vocals, creating a wholly unique listening experience. In addition to his work sculpting, Cork Marcheschi brought the Hose back to the public eye for a new record in 1996 and still performs periodically.

Gary Wright and Wonderwhell - Ring of Changes (1972)

Gary Wright and Wonderwhell - Ring of Changes (1972) - 2016

from prnewswire.com
Keyboardist Gary Wright is the New Jersey-born psychology student who landed in London at the height of the rock revolution in 1967, where he founded Spooky Tooth and had a successful solo career producing the classic hits "Dream Weaver" and "Love Is Alive." Wright recorded Ring of Changes in 1972 with Wonderwheel, a band featuring Mick Jones, who would go on to found Foreigner, Lindisfarne bassist Tom Duffey and John Bonham-influenced drummer Bryson Graham, with Jones and Graham later joining him and Mike Harrison in a reunited Spooky Tooth. The planned follow-up to Wright's two previous solo albums for A&M Records, 1970's Extraction and 1971's Footprint, the finished record was released for the first time to digital retailers through UMe and as a CD by Cherry Red internationally on July 29.

"I hadn't listened to it in 40 years, but when I put it on, I thought to myself, 'I can't believe this was never released,'" says Wright. "It was more of a rock album than what I had done, but I think it stands up alongside anything that you might hear being played on Classic Rock radio around the world. I hope that people will be surprised by the material. I'm proud of it and I'm glad it's finally coming out so everyone can hear what we did all those years ago."

Produced by Wright and one of the first albums to be recorded at the newly opened Apple Studios on Saville Row, Ring of Changes is remarkably eclectic in style, ranging from the funky blues of "Goodbye Sunday," with lyrics by Gary's sister Lorna Lee, featuring a George Harrison slide guitar solo that sounds like an outtake from All Things Must Pass (which Wright famously played on) to the Crosby, Stills & Nash folk-rock harmonies and Led Zeppelin "Stairway to Heaven" feel of the album's epic closer, "Creation."

"That was the track that got me when I listened to the album again," said Wright.

There are also stylistic nods to The Band in the soulful country of "Set on You," a rollicking Mad Dogs and Englishmen feel to the Hugh McCracken-penned "Something for Us All" and the previously released single, "I Know" (a bonus track which never appeared on the original album) with its The Who meets Bad Company flourish.  "Goodbye Sunday" was previously released by the German label Ariola after it was featured in a ski documentary.

Wright, who was originally introduced to George Harrison by his Hamburg mate Klaus Voormann, who played bass on Gary's first two solo albums, explains how the Beatle ended up playing slide guitar on "Goodbye Sunday," which was not the first time either – Harrison had previously played on Footprint under the pseudonym George O'Hara.

"We were in the studio and I was showing him the song," explains Wright. "He just started playing slide guitar and came up with that line, which I think really worked."

Wright was an American student in Germany when he formed the band the New York Tymes, who were the openers for Traffic's very first gig in Oslo, Norway, where he was introduced by his New Jersey buddy, producer Jimmy Miller, to Island chief Chris Blackwell, who put Gary with members of a band called Art to form Spooky Tooth.

Wright first played keyboards on Harrison's "Isn't It a Pity," then went on to play on most of the rest of the All Things Must Pass album, as well as George's sessions for Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy" and "Back Off Boogaloo." The pair became lifelong friends, sharing an interest in Eastern religions, with Wright contributing to several of Harrison's solo albums. Wright also played keyboards on Nilsson's classic "Without You." Upon signing with Warner Bros. in 1975, Wright released his classic album Dream Weaver, which produced a pair of hit singles in the title track and "Love Is Alive."
