Corky Laing's Mountain - Live In Mell (re-post)
Corky Laing's Mountain - Live In Mell- 2017
Corky Laing was an original member of Mountain. As is so common these days, there have been several versions of the band carrying on their music and traditions. This double CD set was recorded in 2016 on the German Sleighride tour. The sound quality is definitely good, but not great. There is a lot of stage talk, telling stories and the like on this set. Beyond that we get some classic Mountain songs, a couple Cream tunes and more all delivered in style. This is a great live album, really.

Third World - AIYE-KETA (Steve Winwood, Remi Kabaka, Abdul Amao) (re-re-re-post)
Third World - AIYE-KETA (Steve Winwood, Remi Kabaka, Abdul Amao) - 1973
.In 1973, while Winwood was on hiatus from Traffic due to illness, he took part in a reggae trio called The Third World. It was a one-off project, not to be confused with the better-known, long-running reggae band of the same name. His two collaborators were African musicians Remi Kabaka (who had played with Winwood in Ginger Baker's Air Force) and Abdul Lasisi Amao (a founding member of the African worldbeat group Osibisa). Their one and only album Aiye-Keta was produced by Winwood, who also played keyboards, lead guitar, and moog synthesizer. The lead vocals were done by Kabaka (who wrote all of the songs), but the album is mostly instrumental. The reggae sound is relatively spare, while Winwood's spacey keyboards add a fairly predictable Traffic-like flavor. Aiye-Keta is listenable but unsurprising. "Irin-Ajo" is the high point. Note: some later printings of the album gave artist billing to the three members instead of to Third World, possibly to avoid confusion with that other band

Spirit - Two Sides Of A Rainbow - Live At The Rainbow - 2CD Remastered Edition
Spirit - Two Sides Of A Rainbow - Live At The Rainbow - 2CD Remastered Edition - 2019
In March 1978, Spirit undertook a series of shows in Germany and the UK with a line-up of RANDY CALIFORNIA (guitar, lead vocals), LARRY “FUZZY” KNIGHT (bass, vocals) and ED CASSIDY (drums). The shows performed by the trio were outstanding, but perhaps the most memorable was the set performed at The Rainbow in London. With a sold out venue, the band performed such classic songs as Mr. Skin, Animal Zoo, 1984, Nature’s Way, All the Same and I Got a Line on You. Spirit also performed six encores including covers of All Along the Watchtower, Stone Free and Wild Thing. Recorded with the intention of releasing a live album, it was found the multi-track tapes had some problems and so Randy California elected to repair the issues when compiling the single album Live Spirit (released the following year and drawing upon recordings made in London and elsewhere).
Fortunately, a separate recording was made using a feed from the front of house sound desk and from these tapes it has been possible to prepare a record of the band’s entire performance on 11th March 1978. TWO SIDES OF A RAINBOW – Live at the Rainbow 1978 has been compiled by Spirit archivist and custodian Mick Skidmore and also features nine newly remastered bonus tracks drawn from the Live Spirit album.
This release also features a new essay by Mick Skidmore and has recollections from Larry “Fuzzy” Knight”. The package also features many photographs from the period. TWO SIDES OF A RAINBOW – Live at the Rainbow 1978 is a fine tribute to the trio incarnation of a wonderful band at their peak.

Shawn Phillips - Continuance
Shawn Phillips - Continuance - 2018
from bongoboyrecords
Being primarily influential within the 1960's and 1970's American folk rock musician Shawn Phillips has released his most latest album to date titled "Continuance". The guitarist, vocalist and sitar player, has released what some call daring, socially conscious, and expressive piece of his time. That said, the musician has mixed together hard rock, blues, funk, jazz, classical and new age into such an experience of style is simply enthralling yet unreal even.
Never hearing any of his previous works prior to this album, the album stood out for itself. Capturing that experience of essence that showcased raw but impressive talent for Shawn Phillips. It being his 26th solo effort release in fact. Take for instance such tracks as "Back To The Fusion", "Dancing In Survival", "Mirror Of Light", and "The Force That We Call Life", all captivate this eeriness of tone, that makes the vocalization so moving, the instrumentation just keeps it altogether for the faith of the music.
Like the melodies displayed captures this tone that depicts what was said before, except some how it makes the music just more empowered and gripping. Vocals can be spread far and wide, intertwining within the music of the instruments, that it appears as if at times, the music never wants to end. When it does come to an ending point, you are taken a back to the sounds that were just heard, wanting to hit replay if not eagerly wanting more of his works that is Shawn Phillips.
When it comes down to it, the material at hand, sounds very stable with lots of progression and talent of experience thrown across it. This release showcasing such works, that the material never gets old or faded, it becomes fresher with each hear through. Shawn Phillips being an artistic musician of his lifetime, that will hold up to what he does best, with creating such creative pieces of art, that is made into what many know as music. “Continuance”, is an album for the current timing, that says so much, there is nothing left to be said of it really.

The New Lou Reeds - Screwed
The New Lou Reeds – Screwed - 2003
from spacecityrock.com
There's nothing wrong with ambition. If a man doesn't take himself seriously -- not to say self-seriously -- then who will? It's rare to see a genius who isn't convinced of it himself. If one displays these convictions, however, it behooves one to have the courage of them, as well. Case in point: if your band is named after one of the single most important men in the history of American independent music, and you name one of your songs after someone ("Peter Laughner") who might have been another, then you owe it to yourself to take a chance or two with your music. More if you can.
Stephe DK of the New Lou Reeds doesn't seem interested in taking chances. It's not so much that his music isn't listenable; it's more that his ambition seems to reach no further than namedropping -- the music can be lumped without much difficulty with the latter-day white blues that has become so prevalent in the past three or four years. Trendiness aside (rather a kind move on our part), the reason for this music to exist is flimsy. Well, that's not really fair; music that's simply about life and death and hanging around in bars is something that people need. It helps them make sense of their lives, and I don't want to sound like I'm discounting the value of that kind of thing. But it's the music in general that's really important, rather than any particular artist or even any particular song.
You can't make a name for yourself playing music of no distinction, even if its pedigree is right. And the Reeds' cause is not advanced by songs like "Teenage Metalhead," which idiotically pays tribute to the most pointless, embarrassing and small-minded tendencies of rock-n-roll. I can't say that I hate this record, but perhaps the unkindest cut for Screwed is that the answer to the million-dollar question "does this rock?" is a resounding "sorta.
